The cyclist involved in a collision with a car in Falmouth three days ago has died in hospital.

Police have just confirmed that the man, aged in his fifties, died at around 8pm yesterday in the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro.

Tributes can be left to the man by clicking on the comment box below.

He had been in a serious condition in hospital ever since receiving head injuries as a result of the collision, at around 9.30pm on Sunday.

Following the collision the road was closed for more than nine hours, while crash scene investigators examined the scene.

Police set up bright arc lights at the scene to allow investigators to work into the night and the road was not reopened until 6.45am on Monday morning.

An eyewitness who passed the scene just minutes after the incident said: "There were a lot of people standing around with a man lying sprawled in an awkward position right up against the kerb.

"He did not seem to be moving and people were bending down speaking to him."

He added police and ambulance had not yet arrived but it was clear from the look on people's faces he was badly injured.

Nearby resident Malcolm Perkins, who saw the aftermath of the accident said: "He was lying by the kerb with about 10 people around and a woman came down the hill and put a coat over him.

"This is the fourth similar accident since we moved in here six years ago, it should not be a 40mph limit down this hill, it should be 30mph.

He said children cross over the busy road on their way to school and a young boy was hit by a car a couple of years ago in nearly the same spot.

He added the police were on the scene very quickly and an ambulance arrived shortly afterwards.

Police are appealing for any witnesses who were on Dracaena Avenue at around the time of the collision, to contact them. Anyone who can help is urged to contact police on 08452 777444 with any information.

  • A 62-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving following the collision.

He was arrested at the scene and after interview was released on police bail until August 5.
