A 62-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving after a collision with a cyclist on Dracaena Avenue, Falmouth.

The cyclist and a driver of a silver Vauxhall Corsa were involved in the incident at 9.30pm Sunday, May 11 close to Falmouth Police Station.

The rider of the bicycle is in his fifties and was taken to Treliske Hospital by land ambulance.

He remains in hospital in a serious condition.

A man was arrested at the scene and after interview was released on police bail until August 5.

The road was reopened at 6.45am on Monday morning after police accident investigators had been at the scene.

An eyewitness who passed the scene minutes after the incident said: "There were a lot of people standing around with a man lying sprawled in an awkward position right up against the kerb.

"He did not seem to be moving and people were bending down speaking to him."

He added police and ambulance had not yet arrived but it was clear from the look on people's faces he was badly injured.

Nearby resident Malcolm Perkins, who saw the aftermath of the accident said: "He was lying by the kerb with about 10 people around and a woman came down the hill and put a coat over him.

"This is the fourth similar accident since we moved in here six years ago."

He said children cross over the busy road on their way to school and a young boy was hit by a car a couple of years ago in nearly the same spot.

He added the police were on the scene very quickly and an ambulance arrived shortly after.

Police are appealing for witnesses who were on Dracaena Avenue at the time of the collision.
