Speeding drivers and cars with noisy exhausts are to be the subject of a police crackdown in Falmouth and Penryn.

As a result of numerous complaints from members of the public police are cracking down on the issue and from June 1 motorists will who drive in an anti-social way, with an exhaust system altered to create more noise, will be prosecuted.

Inspector John Trott, from Falmouth police station, said: "The issues raised by some of the local communities within our towns reflect a wider trend with drivers who undertake certain modifications to their cars. This frequently includes the fitment of a different type of exhaust silencer to the car.

"I am acutely aware of the problems, which can be caused to communities with noise, especially that caused by motor vehicles. The police will be leading on a number of initiatives in response to complaints identified by community priorities, especially in relation to speed and noise."

Inspector Trott said that he was now warning motorists that from June 1 police officers from Falmouth, with the assistance of the Road Policing Unit, would be prosecuting anyone who drove their car in an anti-social way with an exhaust system that had been altered to increase the noise.

The advanced warning allowed drivers in Falmouth and Penryn the chance to get a legal exhaust fitted.

Issues that a driver should consider getting a new exhaust over include exhausts that meant their car could be heard long before being seen, could be heard from inside another vehicle with windows closed or in moderate to heavy traffic, or had been changed from the original manufacturers' exhaust.

The initiative is planned to continue throughout June, after which it will be reviewed.

Unmarked vehicles are being used to carry out enforcement and gather evidence on vehicles that drive anti-socially.

A community speed watch is also taking place, involving members of the community working alongside officers to gather evidence in relation to speed, in order to deliver education and if necessary enforcement.

Inspector Trott said this was already being done on a daily basis for different periods and times of day and different locations. Three mobile speed guns are being used by staff to address the community concerns.

"At the end of the day, the message I am hearing from the public that have brought the issue to me is that they want to feel safe from speeding traffic within their own areas that they live. Additionally, they want to be free from the frequent noise caused by the exhausts, which make their lives a misery," he added.

the police dont seem to be doing anything about young inconsiderate drivers! there is one car that will continue to park right outside my drive in an area that says no parking turning space only making it difficult not only for me but other neighbours trying to access their drives! after having fowl language and abuse thrown at us when we asked them to move so we could park we contacted the police. the police apparently were going to have a drive around this was 3months ago and they still park out there everynight!

My advice to all is this.
Lets all get guns and use these useless 'boy racer' types as target practice...

i know of a house in Bosmear road that regularly had a visitor that parked with its nose in the drive entrance and totally across the pavement and ive seen police cars drive right past and also cars totally taking up the pavement up from the Royal Cornwall Yachtclub, but hey i expect the police are all members

How can the Police prosecute you for having a 'non-standard' exhaust? If it can pass an MoT it is legal! And it's not just 'young boy racers' that are the most inconsiderate drivers around Falmouth. I have seen many middle aged men and women their Audis and BMWs then gesticulating at me for not waiting while they take up all the road when there was enough room for 2 buses. Stop tarring all 'youngsters' with the same brush and stop anyone who speeds, regardless of age etc.

Where in the article does it say that police are only going to be stopping "youngsters" and not anyone who speeds, as Tom suggests?

I am fed up with being tarred with the same brush as all this "Nuisance" Drivers i have a car with a loud exhaust, I dont speed around built up areas Causing a nuisance of myself, i enjoy motorsport and car modification, does that make me a Boy racer? i dont think so! why dont the police go do some real police work for a change! some of the people who complain must lead really boring lives and dont hesitate to phone the police when a young person wearing a hoodie walks past their house

If the cars are speeding and have "illegal" exhausts now, why wait until 1 June before taking action? If they're illegal they're breaking the law! Also, the Police Inspector is very articulate, says all the right things and has obviously been on a Public Relations course but time will tell whether there is any substance to this initiative.

It's not not the youngsters that the police should 'go after' what about all the people that continue to use mobiles & speed along the Penryn bypass - usually middle aged people on the way to & from work.

You might well say that Ms Con Fused but i have seen a policeman talking on a mobile phone whilst driving. They are hopeless. No arrests = No paperwork=look fwd to early retirement with pension.I Saw two motorbikes belting past Trago's on Sunday,I cannot believe how often i see these people (and i dont live near there)racing along that road,Where are the police ???? tucked up in a layby somewhere ? even if they did catch them they wouldnt prosecute...and that is where the problem lies with most issues.....there is no fear

I work at the bottom of killigrew street. since they narrowed to road there to stop people parking on the pavements a new problem has arisen. People now park so that half their car is hanging out the back of the parking space, esp in the bottom space outside nancy's. i've watched people with 4x4's try and park in mini sized spaces block half the road and then wonder why buses and lorries can't get thro and consequently bring falmouth town centre to a stand still. why can't paeople park sensibly?

The 4x4s are ok in the countryside, but a damm nuisence when parking in towns. They are too bloody big, and half the people driving them have not got a clue how to manuvour and park a larger vehicle and have no consideration for others.
I hope that with the rising costs of fuel will force these gas guzzlers off the road.

SUV are great, they are safe for the occupants, fun to drive and have far superior lines of sight, many are as environmnetally friendly as MPV and large saloons. But jealousy and envy will always make the proles green
