The company behind a proposed Sainsbury's store for Helston will be hoping to gain public support on Friday when they begin a two-day public exhibition in the town.

Outline planning permission is being sought for the foodstore, a petrol station, café and 260-space car park on land currently owned by Flambards.

The development, which would create around 150 jobs, would be accessed via a new roundabout on Clodgey Lane near the existing roundabout beside Helston Community Hospital.

Property developer Terrace Hill has already confirmed that the store would be a Sainsbury's, should the planning application be approved, with Jamie Baker, Sainsbury's regional development executive, saying a store in Helston would increase choice and competition of food shopping for residents.

Details of the scheme will go on display at the public exhibition, which takes place at Helston Methodist Church in Coinagehall Street from 10am to 6pm this Friday and between 10am and 2pm on Saturday.

When outline plans came before Helston town councillors they narrowly voted to oppose the supermarket proposals, due to concerns over the proposed access and the potential impact on town centre businesses.

The plans are yet to come before Kerrier district council's planning department.
