A self-funded animal rescue centre in Cornwall is caring for two endangered birds after they were found in poor condition.

The Cornish Birds of Prey Centre, on the main A39 at Winnards Perch, was contacted last week by a member of the public and the RSPCA about rehoming a pair of Steppe Eagles – which are currently listed as being endangered in the wild.

In a Facebook post shared on Wednesday, the centre, between St Columb Major and Wadebridge, said that although they were already tight on space they couldn’t say no.

Upon their arrival, the centre revealed that both birds were in “very poor condition and extremely hungry”.

The female was said to be "extremely weak" and couldn’t get up off the floor, due to her condition. She had also been suffering from a foot infection for a long time.

The centre also spoke out about the selling of owning, breeding, selling, and swapping all birds of prey in the UK. It said: “There certainly needs to be a law on owning, breeding, selling, and swapping of all birds of prey.

“These birds certainly don’t deserve the life they’ve had and the treatment they’ve received.”

Andy told the Packet: “We’re a self-funded family business – everything we do is for the animals here at the centre.

“We would love more people to come and visit us, to meet the animals and see what we do.

“We would also appreciate any donations, it doesn’t have to be loads, just a couple of pounds to help us continue to look after these animals.”
